A sensitively, intelligently interpreted portrait of an international marriage, of conflicting traditions, the feudal as against the democratic, when Lucy, an American, marries, an Italian. Ansters, aristocratic, proprietary, can never quite countenance the freedom Lucy demands and expects in marriage. They disagree, particularly over Pia, a waif when Lucy brings into the home but is not quite able is cope with. Pia, vile, sensual, is indirectly responsible for the death of a seusin and is a constant within the household, particularly when the sam, France, falls in love with her. Thinking, wrongly, that Pia is involved with his father, France enlists, backs the Fascist even in defect, and is killed.
