This simplified version of the tales of the Norse gods in an attempt to dramatize legends which are, in the main unfamiliar to most children of this age. Unfortunately in retelling the stories of the adventures of Odin, his wife Frigga, Thor the thunder god and Loki the mischief maker, the author has sacrificed the background material which would help the child distinguished between fairy stories, folk legends, and stories valued in his own religion. An introductory explanation is definitely needed here for the setting is vaguely realized. Also there may be some question about the selection of stories, since many favorite legends have been excluded and the characters although simplified for this age group have lost some of the vitality of personality they showed even in Bulfinch.
