The Story of a Unique Experiment turns out to be a delightful book as Mrs. Hayes' records the day by day incidents of her three year experiment in raising a female baby chimpanzee in her home, following all procedures for human infants. Since the author's husband was a research psychologist at the Yerkes Laboratories of Primate Biology they had no trouble getting custody of Viki when she was six weeks old and had the know-how for the few special preparations for her. Viki's routine was like any other baby's -- feeding, toilet training, bathing, etc. -- and her brief, daily ""school"" periods were to teach her human speech (she now understands many words and has a small vocabulary of her own). The experiment, not yet finished, will continue and the Hayes do not plan to send Viki back to a cage existence. The out of the ordinary subject matter and the 16 pages of illustrations should be attention-getting.
