HELLAS: A Short History of Ancient Greece

For those seeking a scholarly yet eminently readable history of ancient Greece- from earliest known beginnings through the Hellenistic period- this is an excellent choice. It is not straight political history, but concentrates on the social and intellectual, in an effect to study the Greek spirit and its contributions, the spirit of inquiry, individuals, democracy and cultural achievement. To this end, the author (whose previous Histories of Greece, of Rome, his Everyday Life in Ancient Greece are standards in the field) has used what the Greeks themselves wrote and recast them for today's readers. The result is lively narrative, entertaining and revealing.
