Clare, a brooding brood-hen in an attractive first person, wonders about the man her nineteen-year-old daughter is marrying and well she might: he's thirty odd and has obviously been strangled by the silver cord while his father strung himself up in the garage. And then there's that mother of his, a fluffy, frilly little thing but.... Not quite her best, but Miss Fremlin is still a pastmistress of this form in which wit conspires with malevolence to keep the ladies of all ages in contented retirement.
