by Charles A. Borden ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 2, 1960
This is a searching analysis of the history and geography of our newest state. Not only does Charles Borden give a total view of contemporary Hawaii, introducing the reader to less familiar areas of the islands, but he gives a critical and comprehensive view of the temperament of the residents--their high regard for education, their predilection toward religious pursuits. In his history he does not attempt to portray the United States as white saviors, but shows to what extent our business men disregarded Hawaiian national feelings in order to implement their own interests. Well paced, vigorous and informative, this text, in its lack of condescension to the reader, might well establish standards for teen-age non fiction material.
