A reprint -- but the original publication on John Day's list -- had so small a sale that this deserves to be handled as a new book. All the ingredients for popularity, except the conventional ""They all lived happily ever after"". A story set in San Francisco and an estate bordering a lake fifty miles or so away, and dealing with the mystery of the identity of a lovely child, with the famous Sinclair amber eyes, and with an uncanny self-possession, in spite of her unusual upbringing in the care of a mulatto woman of shady reputation. There is romance and human passions; there is glamour and poetry; there's a good story, well told.
