by Charles Cooke ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 24, 1941
A you-can-do-it-too guide for the adult amateur pianist, with the emphasis on repertoire rather than technique, on personal rather than professional perfection, by an amateur who combines research and enthusiasm with proof of goals achieved in hobby satisfaction. There are experts' opinions on all branches of piano playing, rules that have been devised for memory training, manual dexterity, etc. from the author's own experience. There is suggestion in the commentary on the literature of the piano, there are how-to-do's of practising, sight reading; there are leads on projects to further the hobby -- all in all the factual material which should be a lift for any non-career pianist. Mr. Cooke's New Yorker background keeps this far removed from an unbalanced diet of indigestible facts and methods, there are plenty of sparkles and chuckles for the afficianado.
