The stories tend toward violence and adventure -- on the seas, in war, betting, pioneering. There is some love, some personal relationship, some mystery. A few humorous bits like Jesse Stuart's story are interspersed among the tenser tales, of which there are many. All have a complex of qualities and a depth and conflict that add up to good reading -- a good lot, intended for men, one which libraries and book-givers can trust.
