by Charles-Ed. Neider ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 17, 1961
Charles Neider, one of the foremost contemporary Mark Twain scholars and editor of The Autobiography of Mark Twain, The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain, and The Complete Humorous Sketches and Tales of Mark Twain has collected 74 essays, articles, sketches, and tales of Mark Twain (the majority of which appear in book form for the first time) plus a very interesting selection of newspaper interviews with the author. The arrangement here is chronological; many of the pieces are extremely topical and are valuable additions to the field of American cultural history. Mark Twain's political and social awareness are everywhere evident and-as always-brilliantly and wittily articulated. Especially interesting are several beautifully executed invectives on the then existing state of copyright laws and the one time suppressed chapter (cancelled in the proofs) of Life On the Mississippi. Especially valuable for students of American literature and history.
