A standard reference book for those who find Fowler a bit too discursive and somewhat precieuse. Dr. Henry Seidel Canby has written an introduction for the American edition. The material is arranged, as in Fowler, alphabetically like a dictionary, but in the course of the amplification of each word or phrase, much valuable information as to source, original definition and usage is given. Word books of all kinds fascinate me, and I found this not less intriguing than the best of them.
