by Charles Graves ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 15, 1964
The author has selected 60 of London's top clubs for description. Each gets a thumbnail history, its facilities described, its entrance and annual fees otted up and its wine cellar ticked off. London is still Clubland. Clubland is the last outpost of class distinction. And gad sir! but the author indicates it's getting harder to hold the barriers up. The structure is threatened by servants who want a living wage with fringe benefits. Mr. Graves addresses himself exclusively to the snob reader which is even funnier on this side of the Atlantic than it could have been in England. He becomes offensively exclusive when he describes White's (the senior club) steps to avoid Ambassadors form Africa (they used to give honorary memberships to ambassadors). ""And high time too"" he applauds to an audience we can only visualize as the bemused recipients of the book as a Christmas.
