THE WATER BABIES

A retelling of a classic story that- to be honest- I always thought was more difficult reading for children than tradition assumed it to be. Here is a retelling and adaptation, with considerable abridgement and revision, but holding to the main body of the tale-the fantasy of the chimney sweep who became a ""water baby"" and lived an undersea life with other real and enchanted creatures. The Marjory Collison illustrations, 28 of them in color suggesting techniques of some of the French illustrators, have the flavor of the story. And the book- on the whole- has more sustained quality than most of those done by this press.
