SEEING STARS

An early love of ""star dust"" brought Charles Wagner out of humble circumstances, out of a small bookshop, into the field of booking lecturers for the Chautauqua circuit. Jack London, La Follette, Bryan, James Whitcomb Riley were on his list; and gradually he turned towards musicians, and between 1905 and 1914 helpled discover and launch Calli-Curci, Mary Garden, Frances Alda, Schumann Heink and others. During the war he turned to theatre, with less success, but he knew everyone, and names of stars cross the pages. Finally, he turned to the one man show -- he put Will Rogers over, he served as impressario and press agent for Stokowski and others. Anecdotal, informal, friendly gossip.
