THE TRESPASSERS

Come to Brittany to film the picture that is to be his greatest, Bret Lange brings with him his own interpretation of the King Arthur legend and a determination to play it in personal terms. His pseudo seraglio includes his wife Linda, whom he would restyle as mistress, his secretary Val, playing the role of mother, and his sister Marge, to whom he feels much closer than he should. Drawn into this vortex of forceful fantasy is Jason Harrison, boyhood friend and foe, now destined to be derailed from his successful, loner life as a painter by Svengali Lange. But, though Jason bites the apple in the form of Linda, and loses a precious painting to Bret in retaliation, he endures and exits from the entanglement sure of purpose, with Val. It is Bret who realizes his own desire for destruction in a final, flaming ""elimination"" that brings him and Marge together forever. The apple may be here, but the subtlety of the serpent is not: a tale of evil painted in broad brush strokes for the less demanding of Mr. Mercer's audience.
