REVEREND RANDOLLPH AND THE UNHOLY BIBLE

Ex-football-star/pastor Con Randollph, now installed with wife Sam (and British gourmet-cook Clarence) in the penthouse that goes along with his prestigious Chicago-church post, finds the murdered body of retired prof Johannes Humbrecht--and is promptly kidnapped by a Mafia bigwig who's out to grab Humbrecht's Gutenberg bible (a secret edition). . . and thinks that Randollph now possesses it. But the pastor-sleuth escapes in time to hear the reading of Humbrecht's will--which does indeed leave Randollph a million dollars and the Gutenberg! (The Bible, however, isn't in its supposed hiding-place.) And as more bodies surface (Humbrecht's lawyer, the Mafia king), Randollph leads the way for old chum Lieutenant Casey--wrapping it all up, thanks to some semi-divine inspiration. Even more improbably plotted and motivated than previous Randollphs--with the usual hodgepodge of chatter (morality-sermons, church history, current church politics) to win over some readers. . . and thoroughly put off most others.
