Mr. Boland has written a highly entertaining and contentious book in which he seeks to prove that a good many people found their way to America before Columbus. He thinks they included some some Romans, and an ancient Chinese; also a large number of Irish monks between the fifth and tenth centuries, and later various Vikings from Iceland and Greenland (among them Ericsson) between the tenth and the fourteenth centuries; later still a Scottish nobleman and a Portuguese -- all of them neglected and suppressed, in the opinion of the author, by historians who blindly support the principle of NEBC, i.e., No Europeans Before Columbus. Equally devoted to his principle, the author allows his vivid historical imagination to range unbounded; he takes the Icelandic sagas at their face value, and reaches firm conclusions on the basis of the scantiest archeological evidence and the most improbable contingencies. The result is a wildly speculative book which, taken in that spirit, makes good reading.
