A first person story, by Doc Baker, of the Kid takes care of the facts of the case about the Kid's jail break and his death -- now grown into tourist legends. For Doc, riding and knowing Hendry Jones for a long part of his outlaw career, recalls the fun and hell-raising, the troubles with some of their gang, and the tension that held them when the Kid was caught and condemned to be hung by old Dad, who hated his assignment. He follows the Kid -- with death right behind his shoulder- when he breaks out of jail, makes his way to Mexico and returns to learn why Nika has married dying Miguel; he is there when the Kid kills and knows why; and he is unable to prevent the killing of his hero-boss when Dad catches the Kid after he has been with Nika. This is a California story that ranges the coast to Mexico, that makes a myth into a man whose gun and heart -- and luck were not quite enough. That Western market that likes a you-were-there transcript.
