JAMES CLERE MAXWELL & ELECTROMAGNETISM

Like so many important scientific discoveries, the theories of James Clerk Maxwell were neglected until many years after his death. His main contributions were the discovery of electromagnetic waves which he compared to light waves, the creation of the Maxwell disc, which expanded the science of color, and proof that the rings of Saturn were not solid, but fluid. This is a chronological biography emphasizing each aspect of Maxwell's work and academic career -- his papers to the Royal Society on curves, color and lines of force, his support of the molecular theory of physics, his experiments in electricity and magnetism. A well defined audience of scientific high school students should find this valuable.
