This unfinished story of Jack London's which has been completed by Robert Fish, an excellent entertainer himself, is something of a sport and you can use the word both ways. The Bureau of the title refers to an organization of philosopher-executioners who kill- for money- providing it seems ""socially right"". At their head is one Ivan Dragomiloff, in private life the devoted Uncle Sergius Constantine of Grunya, also something of an anarchist until she falls in love with Winter Hall, a millionaire socialist, determined to end the bureau. Hall hires Drago to destroy its head, i.e., himself, and since Drago must admit that Hall's arguments are valid, he orders his men to kill him- if possible. Follows the long pursuit- in which Drago eludes and defeats all his assailants, but is honor bound himself to fulfill his organization's commitment... In Drago's words, ""an impossible madness of adventure"", or, old-fashioned iggery-pokery with a purpose. Naively likable.
