by Charline & Michael Rich Gibson ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 1, 1970
The view from the stands, by devoted fan and baseball wife Charline Gibson--a pleasant presentation of basic facts and finer points to make know-it-alls out of tag-alongs. Mrs. Gibson, taking for granted only the most rudimentary hit-and-run understanding, gets right to first base and then on around the field, explaining positions and strategies, pitches and swings, fair and foul play. . . . Then come celebrations of the much-neglected coaches, the most-high manager, the power behind the plate (""the umpire's life isn't easy""), and the eternal fan. Personal touches abound, from comments on the feelings of black players to tips on what to wear to the ball park. More than worth their weight in paper are an appendix on scoring and a lively glossary of baseball terms. Mrs. Bowie Kuhn (wife of the Commissioner) contributes an enthusiastic introduction, and husband Bob Gibson (the St. Louis Cardinals' pitching ace) gets in his two cents constantly in footnoted amplifications and digressions, just so you won't forget who wears the glove in the family. But there's hope--now that we have a wife's guide, who knows, maybe next on the horizon Baseball and the Single Girl.
