A small, hand-sized book about a small, lap-sized dog. On River Road, a car drops off a little white dog and drives off. The Fitzes don't want him--he's too small--but bring him a bucket of water. Mrs. Applegate doesn't want him--he's too noisy--but feeds him. The Swanson kids want him, but they have so many pets that their mother says no. Miss Pepper doesn't want him either--she has a gorgeous garden--even when she finds him cuddled on the petunias and splashing in the sprinkler. Graeber tells readers just how this small dog insinuates himself into Miss Pepper's garden and into her lap in an extremely appealing tale. The watercolor and gouache illustrations do full justice to the dog's doggy charm and the garden's green and growing lushness. Miss Pepper herself is white-haired but wears sneakers, a sensible sun hat, and a fabulous blue-flowered vest.
