Original fairy tales from Britain with a sunny disposition, ranging from fabulistic barnyard to once-upon-a-time palace to today's suburbs: Red Biddy is a hen who learns to henpeck her rooster; Angus is a lonely giant who becomes bodyguard toe princess; Peter is a contemporary of ours who fishes a mermaid out of a polluted river and has to find a place to keep her. An enchanted plum tree that gives birth to a princess and an odd little dragon that finds a home in a dog house also have parts to play in these lighthearted, bite-sized stories. The text is challenging for the interest level, but the gently spoofing style should find an audience both when read aloud and when picked up by an advanced younger reader. Delicate, often humorous pen and ink drawings accompany.
