Another agreeable but improbable mystery-romance for Beacon Hill's young widow Sarah Kelling (The Family Vault), now down to her last 35-acre estate in summery, WASP-y Ireson's Landing. But when Sarah arrives there, along with unspeakably Jewish fiancÉ Max Bittersohn, there's a rash of strange incidents--from the mysterious appearance of an alien looking-glass in the entry hall to a pair of murders: eccentric old Miffy Tergoyne and her longtime companion Alice Beaxitt are both victims. And, even worse, a flurry of antique robberies tends to cast suspicion on Max, an antiques expert. So poor Max lands in jail. . . while Sarah builds tedious hypothetical cases against an assortment of locals and relatives. Lightweight, featherheaded plotting overall (with an especially unlikely windup)--but MacLeod's deft dialogue and Sarah's preppy spunk will again please those with more taste for Boston-Brahmin social comedy than convincing mystery.
