THE RECYCLED CITIZEN

Once again, Beacon Hill's Sarah Kelling and her art-maven husband Max Bittersohn (The Bilbao Looking Glass, etc.) are dragged into some lightweight sleuthing by Sarah's cutesily eccentric relatives. This time the focus is on that dear do-gooder couple, Cousins Dolph and Mary, who are planning a big auction (a glorified Chestnut Hill garage sale) for their favorite cause: the Senior Citizens' Recycling Center, where poor seniors get meals in exchange for soda-pop cans. The festive preparations are marred, however, by the murder of Center regular Chet Arthur. Was street-person Chet a random mugging victim? Perhaps not, think pregnant Sarah and doting Max--when they find traces of heroin in Chet's shopping bag. . .and $40,000 in his cellar retreat. So, disguising themselves as street-people, the Kelling clan goes detecting--and finds evidence that (in a ludicrously unlikely scheme) drug-pushers are using the can-recycling to camouflage dope-smuggling. But there'll be another murder--Ted Ashe of Syndicated Slime turns up dead on auction night--before the primary culprit (the obvious suspect, alas) is unmasked. Precious, talky doings, more giddy than witty--but harmless enough dilettante-folderol for MacLeod's following.
