WALK TO THE PARADISE GARDENS

Julia and Charles Cant, a middle aged, childless couple rather isolated in their inclinations and indulgent in their habits, decide to take a short vacation in Paradise Gardens, where Julia had lived as a child and which has now become a rather cheap holiday spot. Roy Tressida, toward whom Meg- his wife- only entertains pity and disgust, runs a tourist camp, and while they have very little in common with the Cants- they spend some time together, involve them- if only briefly- in their disagreeable domestic situation, and spark off episodes which surprise and shame the Cants. Julia, drunk at a beach party, is guilty of the most wanton lapse, and Charles is just as uninhibited with Meg-occasioning the tragedy to follow.... The setting is Australia, and Charmian Clift writes easily- if with no particular distinction. The novel, in spite of the title, is convincing more than inviting.
