Although slipping into wonder now and then at the glory of ascent and wind in the ears, the authors do not blink away the potential dangers, and even include a sad tale about a man whose pitons were not all they should be. Repelling, Prusiking, belaying, glissading--all the exotic jargon of the fancy--are thoroughly explicated. Thoughtfully and modestly the authors include an evaluated bibliography, and there are sections on weather forecasting, food preparation, and a rundown of popular North American climbs. With an introduction by James Ramsey Ullman, this is an invitation to belay your fears and glissade.
