A happy collaboration of a member of the American Mt. Everest Expedition, Mr. Penial, and outdoor journalist Mr. Casewit, who have produced a how-to about one of the most hazardous and soul-cleansing outdoor activities. This is a careful overview for the beginner--hopefully a stout-hearted beginner. All about equipment, supplies, procedures, organization and stern safety measures. Although slipping into wonder now and then at the glory of ascent and wind in the ears, the authors do not blink away the potential dangers, and even include a sad tale about a man whose pitons were not all they should be. Repelling, Prusiking, belaying, glissading--all the exotic jargon of the fancy--are thoroughly explicated. Thoughtfully and modestly the authors include an evaluated bibliography, and there are sections on weather forecasting, food preparation, and a rundown of popular North American climbs. With an introduction by James Ramsey Ullman, this is an invitation to belay your fears and glissade.
