THE FIRST LAKE DWELLERS

This sober story continues Mr. Osborne's Series on early European man (see The First Bow and Arrow and The First Puppy). Arvi, whose people live by a large lake and whose father is chief of a tribe divided by the occupations of hunting and farming, hears one day the warning notes of a warring horde called the Shining Stones. He warns his father, an agricultural man, of the danger but his father is unable to convince Trotting Fox, the leader of the hunters, of the need to prepare for a siege. When the attack comes it is awful and disperses Arvi's people so that they must think up new ways to live. Taking to the lake, they build their houses upon it and use the surrounding land for a renewed effort at farming that finally convinces Trotting Fox and his hunters of the need for closer cooperation.
