The ""adult"", fairy-tale fiction in this collection bears an unflattering resemblance to a melange of the worst of Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, and Hoffmann. The intrigues and indulgence of nineteenth-century nobility, sorcery, ancestral ghosts, and unrequited royal romance--all are presented in sophisticated, sentimental versions of the classics. Certainly not for children--here an emperor without clothes would simply occasion a gossip scandal--nor for modern adults, who would find little interest or entertainment in tritely-told ignoble vagaries, this book seems oddly suited to an audience of scullery maids in a Baroque castle--which severely limits any contemporary response.
