Heavy weather in 17th-century heather as once again the author makes her comparatively modest way through the perils of Katrine Fraser--an orphan caught in the tumult of Scots Covenanters and Royalists. Kate, as fiery as her hair, is off to live with a poor uncle until she is rescued from a scrabbling life by boisterous Sir Thomas of the castle Grianan, who loves her fierce spirit and takes her home to wed his son Nicholas. But Nicholas is not interested, although Sir Thomas' natural son Sandy would have her any way at all. Eventually Kate will gallivant from one adventure to another in the wake of the men's shifting alliances to the Earl of Montrose who leads first the Covenanters, then the Royalists. Agreeable.
