FOG OF DOUBT

More than a London fog obscures the case in which a Frenchman-a rake- is found clubbed to death with a mastold mallet in the home of Dr. Evans. The close circle formed by his wife- Matilda, by his sister- Rosie- pert and pregnant, and by Tedward- another doctor who shares his practice as well as his affection for Rosie, allows sympathy to deflect suspicion, until Rosie's death from an abortifacient brings a private satisfaction and a public judgment.... There's a general excellence here, of decor, dialog, and the shifting implications of guilt- to give this its superiority.
