BOY

The prewar idylls of an upper-middle Bordelais family menagerie at their Riviera summer villa narrated alternately by Suzon, under-housemaid moyenne sensuelle who is forever invoking Our Lady of Buglose, and runt-sized Hildegarde just reaching that awkward age and infatuated with her Uncle Boy. He's ""handsome, fastidious, refined"" with great ""good looks and charm"" according to the more indulgent members of the tribe but -- to the envious -- nothing but a playboy and ""a dissolute bounder."" Aside from bedding Suzon, the local shop girls and a skinny society girl to whom Hildegarde refers as ""Dolly Lovelivingdangerously,"" Boy swills brandies, gambles (and loses big), and races his sky blue and maroon Baby Sports Model. . .until that last fatal drive to the casino wipes out his vivre along with all that very French joie. De Rivoyre writes a competently involving narrative with a popular appeal for the ladies whose heartstrings are still tied to last year's summer's romance.
