Paul Joplin was a lad of nine when he heard the common words ""Lost at sea"" about his father. Seven years later, in 1842, when Tom Haddagan, the slightly simple store keeper, said the lad should go to sea and offered to go along, Paul's mother finally relented. On the three year whaling voyage, certain events, led Paul to believe his father was still alive. The quest of Tom and Paul for Captain Joplin, and the results, are narrated in the first person in a lucid, fast-paced style, by an author who knows how to use words and sentences. An excellent adventure story, sensitive and serious-- on a par with The River of Pee Dee Jack(1962, p.185, J-63) by the same author.
