More of Tammy (the earlier book- Tammy Out of Time reached other audiences with Debbie Reynolds- on the record and in the motion picture) takes her from her shantyboat on the river out into the world-- after Pete, who was to marry her, goes away to college. Tammy who has never gotten ""ladyfied"" decides she needs more schooling- beyond the one book she really knows- the Good Book- and takes the Ellen B. down the river to attend the university- and ""pursue speaking, not so much public as private, though it is called public"". Wealthy, notional Mrs. Call, with whom she is to stay, reverses the Dean's decision and comes to live on the Ellen B. Tom Freeman who gives the course in public speaking finds her Elizabethan-flavored folk speech not to be improved on and takes a protective, romantic interest in her; and when Pete, to whom she has been steadfast, moves away from her- Tom is there and is perhaps more of a man..... A comfortable, likable choice for conservative, perhaps countrified tastes, and certainly those who liked the earlier book- for its unretouched sentiment and warmth.
