ALVIN FERNALD, FOREIGN TRADER

Alvin Fernald never could keep his Magnificent Brain under control. It let loose before in The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald and Alvin's Secret Code, and this time, when it thinks up a random list of ingredients and directions to send on the entry to the ""Kitchenmate Candy Sweepstakes,"" it shoots Alvin onto the prizewinning trip to Europe. Shoie (his best friend) and the Pest (his younger sister) go with him and manage to follow him on his hyperactive, continental pace. Before he left, Alvin was on the verge of flunking Eggfoot (his verbalization of the subject Economic Geography and Foreign Trade), a topic which is much discussed but hard to visualize. But his contact with businessmen (the Kitchenmate president and p.r. man, and the inventor of a new metal), and his own construction of a super bicycle (with international marketability) which keeps him just one hot panting breath in front of an industrial spy, earn Alvin the new title of Foreign Trader. Alvin's trumped up candy was called ""Fernald's Fireballs"" and this is a tangy confection to the humorous taste of little boys.
