Fleeing from almost omnipotent alien invaders, our descendants pour back through time tunnels into the 20th century. Unfortunately a monster or two goes along for the ride, providing what little action there is in this attractive but talky tale. Simak's talent for reducing apocalyptic themes to a manageable domestic scale falls somewhat flat under the weight of interminable logistics and politics but those who admire the author will find some pleasures here.
