TRAILING THE COWBOY

A mass of material, from contemporary newspapers, letters, diaries, etc., reports on all aspects of the cowboy, the way he looked as he preceded and later took part in the conquest of the West. The many observers, damning or praising, tell of many things:- the differences between the cowboys of the north and south plains; cowboy jargon and dress; their horses and labor strikes; their part in law -- and disorder; their strenuous work and its hazards; their guns and their adventures with rustlers; their gambling, drinking and excursions into town for fun, festive or wild and rough; their foes (Indians, grangers, nesters, sheepherders); their practical jokes, their loyalty and their respect for women. Murders, morality, religion, dances, verse and tall and short tales, women cattle handlers-wind up the categories under which these selections are grouped. Accounts of the period before 1900, contrasting as they are, give a mosaic of a true western product which should yield useful reference material.
