A very young but happy adventure for the Hopalong set, this is paced for a younger age group than the author's Riding the Pony Express. Danny spends a wonderful summer on his Uncle Mack's Bar-K ranch, riding, learning about what a cowboy does, camping out with Slim, the real cowboy, making a friend, and then spending an ry night on the plains alone when he has to be very brave. After his night outdoors and quick thinking that helped put out a fire, slim calls him a ""real cowboy"". But the true surprise comes when Danny finds he may live in the West and see the fall round-up and rodeo when his parents decide to stay for good. Elementary and pre-Lone Ranger. We have not seen the Grace Paull illustrations, but her others have been excellent.
