FATHER FOX'S FEAST OF SONGS

Twenty-one of Clyde Watson's banal, ersatz nursery rhymes, from Father Fox's Pennyrhymes and Catch Me & Kiss Me & Say It Again, set to music (and decorated with Wendy Watson animal cutups in bandannas, patched overalls, and crinoline). Most of the tunes are standard, derivative, and mildly catchy; but they are frequently unsatisfying in shape, with abrupt endings. Along with a few minor-key lullabies, and a waltz or two, there are a few--""The Baby Cakewalk,"" ""Bimbo Bombo""--that try for a jazzier, more contemporary sound, though with somewhat awkward results. And occasionally--as in ""Dilly Dilly""--the melodies take quick jumps in and out of the key signature, making them especially unlikely candidates for singalongs. With serviceable piano accompaniments, and chords for guitar accompaniment: probably a requisite item--but no more noteworthy as music than as verse.
