A rhyming, old-time country alphabet that tells a sort-of story as it goes. Beginning ""A is for apple as everyone knows,"" it shows a little girl and her mother picking apples, loading them in a cart, and taking them to the fair--passing daisies, an egg woman, a farmer, and a group of gossips as they go. The alphabet proceeds through various sights and performers at the fair and a couple of disruptive incidents involving a pig on the loose and a thief who runs off with some of the goodies on the judging table. (Besides the th for thief, we also get a ch (cherry) and, with pedagogical intent, a soft C (cider) and soft G (gentleman). The project ends nicely with a small picture of a snakelike winding road and the final entry, ""Z is for zig-zag all the way back/ Home again, home again, appledy-jack."" Tile pictures, deliberately corny and admittedly cute, are perky enough to keep everything stepping along.
