As a child she ""lost"" her mother to a baby brother, got a nun (at school) instead. Combative with her father, distant from her mother, she took her elitist expectations to college, then turned a guest editorship at Mademoiselle into a career. Unexpectedly pregnant, she married Ed who turned out to be the biggest baby in the family. Nine years and three children later, they were divorced and Colette Dowling, after a brief high, came down hard to the fraudulent stoicism of her life. Writing (a clipped, candid style) was always an outlet, later also a source of income. Psychoanalysis helped put her needs in perspective; ultimately, Joel helped to satisfy them. Lightly, directly, she conveys the struggles with the requisite sense of humor. Sincere but rather predictable.
