This action-packed, game-trapping novel with an African setting reads best as a movie: its scenes, violent actions and characters are vividly casual. Maxwell and his embittered, crippled wife Nancy set out to trap baby hippos. With them are Maxwell's ward and occasional mistress, Jen, and Webb, a brash young mechanic. These complicated interrelationships, though somewhat slowly filled in, add an extra tension as the country flares into its struggle for independence, and Maxwell's group goes off on a quixotic attempt to rescue some rare white rhinoceroses from the natives who kill them for their horns. Another game trapper, Jen's new lover, joins the group; young Webb is accidentally killed; and the natives pick off the rhino-filled trucks by ambush and plane until finally only Maxwell and his wife are left... All of this is told at an exciting pace and if none of the characters are likable, it is just as well since most of them come to brutal ends.
