MULE DEER

One of two American species of deer, the mule deer is, says Bare, ""the most important big game animal of the West."" After a dry, textbookish opening, Bare introduces one doe and her faun and uses them as a loose frame for discussing the development of the fawn, the annual growth of bucks' antlers, rumination in general, deer grooming, bucks' battles at mating time, and deer diseases. With matching photos, this can serve a utilitarian function, but Bare's approach is workaday and her style unpardonably stiff.
