by Compton Mackenzie ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A
A little narrative of High Beaching, a village in England which has become precious to the writer through its place in his memory from boyhood, and which he attempts -- not too successfully -- to recreate for the reader. The story is told as reminiscences, and bit by bit one becomes orientated, seeing the place and the people, and sharing the knowledge of the undercurrent of romance and tragedy. The love story seems artificial, and lacks purpose. It falls between two stools, and will probably appeal neither to those who want fiction nor to those who want memoirs. The English setting may win a few scattered readers.
