Redheaded half-English Anna Crispin's marriage to gorgeous Prince Gregory of Kumaria was not a love match but one commanded by the Czar and met with ambiguous feelings on both sides. Still, when Gregory bolts from the house and heads for the Caucasus--scene of a longterm war with the Moslems of Daghestan, led by a new Imam, Shamyl--and is soon missing presumed dead, Anna must go to find out for herself. She makes it to Pyatigorsk and is on to Tiflis as soon as she can find a military escort. Her escort, however, changes her plans; Count Paul Kuragin is quite the cream of the Muscovite team, and he and Anna are drawn to each other instantly, but as soon as they reach Tiflis, rumors abound. Who killed Gregory--the Moslems, or Paul? Does Paul have a Moslem mistress and child? Whose mistress is the beautiful Natalie Gadiani--Gregory's or Paul's? And what mischief is Gregory's cousin Daniel up to? Before long, Anna hits the trail to Kumaria alone, and is of course captured by the barbarians; she's at the point of being drafted into a harem when she discovers that one of the Imam's prisoners is. . . Gregory. He's less likable than ever--and in no shape to rescue anyone. A well-crafted chase-romance from a veteran of the Caucasus (House of Kuragin); for those who prefer Caspians and Kasbahs to castles.
