THE MYSTERY OF THE DISAPPEARING CARS

One of Sam Jones' obligations in accepting a scholarship to Winthrop College involves working at a resort hotel in Vermont for the summer. If he proves worthy, the hotel owner, Ezra Plympton, will pay his way through college, and he, in turn, will work each summer. His orders are to get to Marble Hill by a set date, without hitchhiking. Sam runs into difficulties, and meets the other scholarship winner in the process. They manage to get a paid ride with a grouchy truck driver and reach their destination on time. The boys become involved indirectly in a stolen antique car case, and must find enough evidence to clear themselves. They secure the proof, but are bound and gagged in their efforts. Some suspense is cranked up, but the conclusion is telegraphed. It is adequately written, although characters are not well developed.
