The author of A Notebook for the Wines of France (Knopf) here reaches out to embrace a ""world of wines."" Inevitably, with so wide a coverage France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary and Yugoslavia, Austria, Greece, South America and the United States he cannot attempt the depth study of the earlier book. But for the average layman and uninitiate this gives the facts on regions, labels and vintages, tables of brand names, historical background, processes, problems of nomenclature, and something on the proper care and serving of wines. One third of the space is, almost inevitably, devoted to the wines of France and Germany. A useful reference work for those who would be informed.
