Flower Drum Song may have been a successful musical, but its author's latest Chinese spectacle belongs, serialized, in a Hong Kong True Confessions. ?um Sin is a ""water bug,"" a poor junk fisherman with a lust for an outboard motor to make him rich and important, a loving wife, and a half-breed seventeen-year-old girl with a red (horrors!) pigtail whom he has never seen fit to adopt as his daughter despite her labor and loyalty on the junk. The way to get the motor and its prestige is to sell the girl, Pigtail by name, to the villainous Hop Fong for distribution on the virgin market in Macao. Of course, Lum Sin is basically a good, simple man; and of course, Pigtail escapes only to find her own love estranged from her and then to be taken and rescued again, complete with a rope the put around her own neck. Even the lively water-village of Aberdeen is colorless here, fitting in with the plot and the prose.
