SODA JERK

A teen-age boy who works at the drugstore counter in rural Cheston, Virginia, observes himself, the patrons, and their milieu in 28 sketch-like poems. Not nearly as perceptive as Rylant's autobiographical observations in But I'll Be Back Again (1989), the voice here seems--despite contemporary touches--to be from an earlier time, while some of the thoughts seem too adult for the speaker. Placing most of the uninspired paintings in a center section makes for an uninviting format. In all, then, a disappointing collection from one of our finest authors.
