TEN BIG FARMS

The Jordan family was tired of the city. But which kind of farm in the country should they buy? Mr. and Mrs. Jordan and Jane and Jimmy took a trip across the U.S.A. to visit 10 big farms. Dahlov Ipcar's superbly patterned, richly earthy illustrations in black, taupe, green and rust, convey the fruitful beauty of rhythmic hillsides and flourishing acres as the Jordans visit a poultry farm, a fruit farm, a horse farm, a tobacco farm, a dairy farm and a cattle farm, a pig farm, a wheat farm and a sheep farm and a truck farm. The author-artist makes distinguished use of repetition and contrast in pictures and border designs of a calibre so original, so creative that one is compelled to the same predicament as the Jordans -- which farm to take. Then the Jordan's see a small farm, run-down, with a little of everything. And that is the one they buy. Seldom are story, art work, and information so beautifully integrated and harmonious. A satisfying book to meet the most discriminating standards -- ideal for classroom use in the first three grades as read aloud or independent material.
